Why Dressing Up Pays Off 👗

Why Dressing Up Pays Off 👗

Dear Readers,

Is it just me or time seems to be passing faster than when we were children? I know physicists would disagree with me, but in the rhythm of our modern, fast-paced lives, rushing has become the new norm. And with that, comfort has become king.
We live in a time when casual wear dominates both our wardrobes and our social norms. Influenced strongly by the Gen-Z narrative, there has been a cultural shift toward prioritising ease and authenticity in all things - including clothing. It’s easy to see why. Our lives are busier and more demanding than ever. Long workdays, packed calendars, personal obligations, child care, and household duties leave little room (or energy) for the kind of careful dressing that might have been routine in generations past.

It’s no longer realistic to spend two hours preparing for the day, layering structured garments reminiscent of corsets, waistcoats, or stiff petticoats. Instead, we opt for clothing that helps us move through our days more comfortably and efficiently. Leggings, hoodies, sneakers, and oversized sweaters have earned their place in our everyday lives (sometimes with a hefty price tag if they were designed in collaboration with a known brand or artist).

But therein lies the paradox.

WHEN CASUAL BECOMES THE NORM, FORMAL BECOMES POWERFUL
Because relaxed clothing has become the default, choosing to dress up now carries even more meaning. Special occasions feel all the more special when we elevate our appearance to match them. Whether it’s a graduation ceremony, a wedding, a visit to the opera, or even a family lunch on a Sunday afternoon, these are not ordinary moments. They are rare, meaningful experiences that deserve to be remembered.

Dressing up is not about sacrificing comfort or authenticity. It is about showing appreciation - for the moment, for the people around you, and for yourself. And let’s not lie - it is so refreshing to see a well-fitting blazer in a sea of hoodies.

SIMPLE CHOICES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Many people believe that dressing up requires a lot of money, time and effort. It could, indeed. But elevating your look doesn’t necessarily require a dramatic transformation and an empty wallet afterwards. A few thoughtful changes can go a long way in helping you look and feel more put-together:

FOOTWEAR: Swapping sneakers for ballet flats, loafers, or block heel pumps can instantly add polish. For men, trading casual trainers for clean leather shoes or even sleek dress sneakers can signal that the occasion matters.

TOPS: A structured blazer over a simple shirt or blouse elevates any outfit, even if paired with jeans. Replacing a hoodie with a button-down shirt or a refined knit gives your look more structure.

DETAILS: Accessories can quietly transform your outfit. Think classic watches, tasteful jewellery, belts, or a neat handbag. Grooming and cleanliness matter too - freshly ironed clothes, tidy hair, and clean shoes speak volumes.

RESPECTING THE OCCASION - AND YOURSELF
More than anything, dressing up is an act of respect. It honours the significance of the event, the people you’re with, and the effort it took to make the occasion happen. But it also sends an important message to yourself: that you value your presence, your role in the event, and how you show up in the world.

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
