The One Etiquette Mistake I Keep Repeating 🫢

Dear Readers,

We all strive to follow good etiquette, but I have a confession to make - there’s one rule I keep breaking over and over again. And changing my habits around it is harder than I thought.

The mistake? Saying “No Problem” Instead of “You’re Welcome.”

You might feel puzzled now. “What is the problem with ‘No problem’?” you ask.

Well, etiquette considers "No problem" to be rude because it can imply that the person thanking you could have been a problem, but you’re dismissing it. For example, if someone says, “Thank you for your help,” responding with “No problem” might sound like you’re downplaying their appreciation rather than graciously accepting it. Some etiquette experts also argue that it can feel too casual in professional or respectful settings.

Traditionally, when someone thanks you, the proper response is “You’re welcome.” It acknowledges their gratitude and keeps the exchange polite and respectful. But more often than not, I find myself saying, “No problem!” instead.

English is not my mother tongue, but by living abroad, I have been able to communicate fluently in English for many years now. However, it doesn’t come without certain quirks and nuances. Saying “No problem” as a response to “Thank you” is so normalised that I usually say it instinctively before even realising that it is not the most polite response.

Naturally, I am aware that this is a minor issue that won’t rock any boats. But as learning never stops, I will hold myself accountable and hopefully build the habit of saying “You’re welcome” before “No problem” slips out of my mouth.

Wishing you a lovely day with “no problems” 😉

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
