Dear Readers,
It’s the time of the year again! Warmer evenings, longer days and invitations to garden parties and barbecues start to roll in.
While garden parties can range from elegant gatherings under the fairy lights to casual grill parties with friends, a few simple etiquette rules can make the day more enjoyable for everyone. I listed down my Top 5 Tips for Garden Etiquette so you’re ready for the season.
1. INVITATIONS: TIMING IS EVERYTHING 📬
If you’re hosting, send your invitations out with plenty of notice. It’s courteous and also increases the chances that your favourite people will be able to come.
If you're invited, respond as soon as you can. A prompt RSVP helps the host plan food, seating, and all the other little details that make the party preparations easier.
2. GIFTS: A SIMPLE GESTURE GOES A LONG WAY 🎁
Bringing a gift for the host is a sign of good manners. Flowers, wine, or a scented candle show gratitude for the invitation. Just remember that the gift is for the host, and there’s no expectation it will be opened or served at the party (if you brought your favourite bottle of wine with the hopes to have a sip during the evening, you might end up disappointed 🙂).
The only exception to this rule would be if you’ve agreed with the host in advance to bring a dish or dessert to complete the menu served on the day.
3. SHOES: DRESS FOR THE GRASS 👠
No matter how stylish the party, there’s a good chance you’ll be walking or standing on grass. High heels and lawns don’t mix well, so opt for flats, wedges, or sandals that are both comfortable and garden-friendly. You’ll enjoy yourself more, and so will your feet.
4. DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: KEEP EVERYONE INCLUDED 🥗
If you’re the host, ask your guests about any dietary restrictions ahead of time. This way, everyone can enjoy the food without worry or discomfort.
If you’re a guest with special dietary needs, let the host know early. And if your needs are more specific or complex, it’s thoughtful to offer to bring something that suits your diet. That way, you ensure you’re well-fed and take a little pressure off your host.
5. CHAIRS: DON'T OVERLOOK THE BASICS 🪑
It might sound obvious, but having enough seating can make or break a garden party. Buffets and self-service food are great, but make sure your guests have somewhere to sit, especially when they’re ready to eat or relax.
A mix of chairs, benches, or even picnic blankets adds comfort and helps everyone feel welcome. Elderly guests or those with mobility concerns will especially appreciate having a place to rest.
Garden parties are about enjoying the sunshine, sharing good food, and making lovely memories with friends. A little bit of planning and consideration goes a long way - just so you can make sure the memories are worth remembering!
Yours sincerely,
Katarina
