Outdated Etiquette: Do NOT Follow These Rules Anymore! ❌

Dear readers,

In the ever-evolving world we are living in, even the rules of etiquette keep shifting so they can reflect the current modern society better. In today’s newsletter, I gathered 5 outdated etiquette rules that I do not recommend following, as some of them would not be applauded anymore or - even worse - could be seen as rude!

1. KISSING A WOMAN'S HAND
While once considered a gesture of respect and gallantry, the act of kissing a woman's hand has become outdated and can even be perceived as antiquated or uncomfortable by many. A simple handshake followed by a verbal greeting suffices as a respectful acknowledgment in contemporary social settings.

2. ADDRESSING PEOPLE BY THEIR TITLE AND SURNAME
This one is a tricky one as it changes depending on the culture. In English speaking countries, gone are the days when it was appropriate to address others by their title and surname. Instead, it's more common and often preferred to address individuals by their first names, regardless of their status or position.
Please note: This rule is not outdated everywhere. For instance in Eastern Europe, it is still very common to address people with their title and surname, especially in business or academic environments.

3. SENDING INVITATIONS BY POST
In the current digital age, the tradition of sending formal invitations by post has largely given way to electronic invitations. Not only is this more convenient and eco-friendly, but it also allows for quicker RSVPs and easier communication for event hosts and guests alike.

4. TOASTING WITH ALCOHOL ONLY
Traditionally, toasts were made exclusively with alcoholic beverages, but times have changed. With the growing popularity of non-alcoholic alternatives and a greater awareness of diverse dietary preferences, it's perfectly acceptable—and highly recommended—to also raise a glass of non-alcoholic drink during a toast.

5. LETTING A MAN ORDER A MEAL FOR A WOMAN
Back in the days, it was a common practice for a man to take the lead and choose and order a meal for a woman when dining in a restaurant. What was seen as a sign of courtship some time ago, could be seen as intrusive today. Nowadays, it is much more common that every guest makes their own decision and places their order individually.

Etiquette and social norms are a reflection of our society, therefore they change organically as we evolve. I am certain that we will keep seeing more etiquette rules change or being replaced by a different, modern version. However, I hope that we will never phase out values such as respect and mutual consideration for each other, as these are, in my eyes, eternal.

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
