Dear Readers,
Can you believe we’re heading into 2025? To me, the past year has flown by so quickly.
As etiquette is my passion, I envisioned the perfect end-of-year etiquette newsletter to crown it all, only to realise that etiquette is as flexible as society itself, and no rules can ever be set in stone.
However, if you’re looking for some universal and timeless etiquette tips that will remain just as relevant in 2025 as they were in 2024, here is my top three list:
1. KINDNESS ALL THE WAY
In recent years, cancel culture has become a widespread phenomenon on social media, “canceling” people left and right - sometimes for truly trivial reasons. Don’t get me wrong: I strongly believe in holding people accountable for their actions, especially if those actions are illegal or harmful. However, in many cases, it’s the drama that fuels the controversy. In the midst of it all, it’s worth pausing to ask ourselves: Have we never made mistakes? (Hint: We all have.)
In 2025, I hope we can all strive to lead with kindness. Instead of rushing to judge or react, let’s take a moment to breathe and ask ourselves: “Am I being thoughtful? Am I adding something positive to this situation?” A little kindness goes a long way in strengthening relationships and making the world feel a bit warmer.
2. REFINEMENT, NOT SHOWING OFF
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Etiquette isn’t about being rigid or showing off. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself. It’s about treating people - and the spaces you’re in - with care and respect. When we approach situations with this mindset, we naturally bring grace and poise, leaving a lasting impression.
Let’s make an effort in 2025 to bring this respect into every encounter, without ever veering into condescension. True refinement is understated and genuine.
3. OPEN-MINDEDNESS
Etiquette evolves depending on where you are and who you’re with, and that’s what makes it so exciting. Whether you’re attending a formal event or traveling abroad, a little research into local customs can make all the difference and turn you into the star of the show. But remember: it’s okay to make mistakes. Etiquette is about learning, growing, and enjoying the process of discovering new traditions.
As we step into the new year together, let’s carry these reminders with us: be kind, show respect, and embrace lifelong learning. That’s what real etiquette is all about.
Here’s to a graceful and joyful 2025!
Yours sincerely,
Katarina
