Are You Summer Etiquette Ready? 🌞

Are You Summer Etiquette Ready? 🌞

Dear Readers,

As the temperatures rise and our calendars fill with vacations (hopefully!), rooftop parties, and alfresco dining, it’s easy to think that summer gives us a free pass to loosen up. But just like each season has its own charm, it also comes with its own set of social rules. Here are my Top 3 Summer Etiquette Tips to help you stay classy during summer months.

1. PACK CLOSED-TOE SHOES 👠
It might feel counterintuitive to wear anything other than breezy sandals or flip-flops during summer. But beware, certain venues uphold strict dress codes regardless of the season. Upscale restaurants and bars often frown upon open-toe footwear.

For example, The Savoy Grill in London, Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco or Le Bernardin in New York may deny entry if your toes are out in the open. The same goes for exclusive rooftop bars or private clubs, even in beach cities. So if you're heading somewhere sophisticated, pack a stylish pair of closed-toe shoes just in case.

2. MIND YOUR HAT MANNERS 🎩

While wearing a hat during scorching temperatures is a great idea to protect our bodies from overheating and sunburn, there are certain occasions where not removing the hat is considered rude.

For men especially, hats should be removed in places such as:
- Churches and other houses of worship
- Private homes (unless told otherwise)
- Upscale indoor venues like theaters or fine-dining restaurants
- During the playing of national anthems

Ladies wearing traditionally masculine-style hats (like a fedora or trilby) should follow the same rules in formal settings. A good rule of thumb? If you wouldn’t wear sunglasses inside, it’s time to remove the hat too.
An exception to the rule are traditionally feminine-style hats that are part of the outfit (think the outfits of Her Royal Highness Princess of Wales).

3. PLAY THE SUNGLASSES GAME RIGHT 🕶️

Sunglasses are an essential summer accessory, but timing and context matter. In social settings, especially when meeting someone new, eye contact is key. Your eyes express emotions, so hiding them behind dark lenses can come off as detached or aloof.

If you’re outside and the sunlight is blinding, it is recommended to remove your sunglasses for the initial greeting or introduction. Let the other person see your eyes when shaking hands, smiling, or exchanging names - it creates a stronger, more personal connection.

CONCLUSION: Summer Meets Courtesy ☀️
Summer style is all about freedom, but great etiquette means knowing when and where to adapt. So as you pack your sunscreen and plan your getaways, don’t forget to bring along a little seasonal courtesy.

Let’s all enjoy the sunshine - gracefully!

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
